VLAVR had the pleasure of participating in the mid-october Qualcomm 5G summit in Barcelona.
5G technologies are crucial for the growth of VLAVR and the VR industry as it allows us to continually push the envelope in experiences we can offer consumers.
It was very eye opening to see how 5G transformation is occurring now and into the future but also what it will do for the VR industry.
One game changer highlighted in particular, stands out: Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). DSS allows the existing mid-band spectrum used today for 4G LTE to be automatically allocated to 5G services if both the end device and base station are compatible.
This means that in the future we won’t have to build new 5G base stations as we can just add some configurations and convert these stations into 5G stations. This is a big win for accessing extremely rich content and VR users can only win from an innovation like this.
The second game changer for 5G from my perspective is mmWave. The key advantage of mmWave is a higher data transfer rate, but the issues also mean less mileage for the frequency and more barriers for transmission, this will make implementation costly.
However, we’re excited to see 5G press ahead and thrilled that the wheels are in motion for VR to move forward as 5G will be a critical component for the masses to enjoy 5G.
